Fifth graders can write!
Poetry is contageous!
Martha Gallagher shared a poetry form with a circle group and I passed it on to the KCS fifth graders. They became poets! The form is called dekaaz.
Dekaaz is a form of poetry created by Rachel Bagby, a performance artist, poet, author, composer and vocalist.
Rachel herself says…
Dekaaz is wisdom jazz in just 10 syllables. Each dekaaz (dek-ahs) has 10 syllables in three lines.
2 syllables in first line
3 syllables in the second
5 syllables in the third line
Dekaaz is not complete until you speak it out loud to another living being. On the left are the fifth grader's creations.
